Svjetlana Dosen is a painter whose poetic figurative works transform everyday reality into magical visions, exploring love, solitude, and the emotional depth of human existence.
Born in Bosnia in 1978, Svjetlana Dosen studied painting at the University of Arts in Novi Sad, Serbia. After completing her studies, she spent several years living and working in Göttingen, Germany, and Aalborg, Denmark, where she is currently based.
In her paintings, Dosen transforms everyday reality into magical and poetic visions. Her cosmopolitan experience, combined with strong technical mastery, allows her to reinterpret ordinary scenes and elevate them into a vibrant universe of living, emotionally charged figures. Through a refined play of colour and form, she creates compositions that feel both intimate and enigmatic.
At the centre of her artistic world stands the human figure — dreamy, in love, sleepy, erotic, playful, or quietly confused — often placed in dialogue with a wondrous, symbolic nature. These figures seem suspended between action and contemplation, inviting the viewer to question whether they are capable of changing the world or are destined to observe and interpret it from within.
Universal human themes such as existence, life and death, loneliness, passion, fear, love, transience, as well as the duality of animus and anima, fuel her imagination and guide her artistic hand. Her visual language is marked by monochrome and graphic elements set against intense, saturated colours. The resulting contrast evokes the atmosphere of black-and-white cinema interrupted by vivid moments of emotional intensity, creating a distinctly surreal and cinematic mood.
Working primarily in oil, Dosen’s brushstrokes are expressive and confident — at once expansive and restrained — balancing emotional depth with formal clarity.
